Abstract

In order to validate the biocidal activity of Barbasco extract against Boophilus microplus in tropical cattle in the province of Tambopata, the concentration of Rotenone as active ingredient in the extract of Barbasco roots  (Lonchocarpus spp.) was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), then was evaluated the in vitro biocidal effect on ticks extracted from infested cattle. The results showed that the amount of Rotenone in the pure extract of Barbasco is 25.6%, which is equivalent to 256 ± 12.54 mg/ml, the 1% dilution of Barbasco containing 2.56 mg/ml has better activity biocide in all parasitic stages of Boophilus microplus, and is similar to commercial external antiparasitic such as Deltamethrin; while, dilutions with lower concentrations maintain acceptable biocidal activity, especially at the level of adult and nymphal stages. Concluding that Barbasco extract contains a high proportion of Rotenone and is useful for the alternative treatment of ectoparasites.
