Freshwater sources are water resources that are being threatened worldwide, with land use change being one of the main sources affecting their conservation. The objective of the study was to evaluate water quality, using benthic macroinvertebrates, in the Chonta stream, Tambopata, Madre de Dios, Peru. Three sites of the creek with different degrees of disturbance were sampled. At each site, physicochemical parameters of the water were quantified, and macroinvertebrates were collected. Water quality was determined using the Biological Monitoring Working Party index (BMWP). The site with the highest anthropogenic disturbance had the lowest BMWP index value and the lowest values of dissolved oxygen, conductivity, richness, abundance and diversity of macroinvertebrates were found. According to the BMWP index, the three sites evaluated in the Chonta Creek are considered to be of low quality and polluted waters.
