Bibliometric analysis of usability and user experience in Central America

Abstract

Research on usability and user experience (UX) has gained global relevance as a core element in the design of interactive systems; however, in Central America there is still a gap in the systematic analysis of its scientific development. This study aims to examine the evolution, structure, and impact of UX research in the region. A bibliometric analysis of 191 documents indexed in Scopus (2006–2024) was conducted using the Science Mapping approach and the bibliometrix package, incorporating indicators of production, collaboration, and impact. The results reveal an intermediate stage of consolidation, characterized by Costa Rica’s leadership, a predominance of conference publications, and a centralized collaboration structure. Scientific impact remains moderate (H-index=18) and concentrated in a limited number of influential publications. This study provides empirical evidence of the progressive maturity of UX research in emerging contexts, highlighting the need to strengthen publication in indexed journals and diversify research collaboration networks.
