Abstract

Environmental awareness in tourism is a fundamental pillar for fostering a sense of responsibility and commitment to sustainability among citizens, especially in regions of high biodiversity such as Tambopata. This study aimed to identify environmental tourism awareness among 11th-grade students at the Dos de Mayo High School. A non-experimental, applied research design with descriptive and explanatory components, using a mixed-methods approach, was employed. This approach combined surveys, interviews, and checklists with sample of 148 students. Data analysis included descriptive and inferential statistics, as well as thematic coding. Environmental tourism awareness positively influences the students' inclination towards conservation, although it revealed a moderate level of knowledge and varying perceptions regarding the quality of tourism services and community participation. Activities that combine theory and practice, such as visits to natural attractions and participatory workshops, have a greater impact on environmental education.  However, the inconsistent participation of local residents in conservation efforts highlights the need for more robust strategies. In conclusion, strengthening environmental tourism awareness within the school system, through comprehensive educational programs, community outreach campaigns, and training in best practices, is key to cultivating in young people a commitment to conservation and the preservation of the natural and cultural heritage of Tambopata.
